The walk across town was filled with sunshine again, the storm of yesterday having cleared out. Elayna breathed deeply and walked with wide, purposeful steps, planning all the while. She wanted to talk to Kayson about getting their ideas to the right people, where it would be the most beneficial.

Her cell phone buzzed, and she answered a call from her mother. Would she be able to shoot her second cousin’s bridal shower that evening?

Since her say no challenge was over, she answered without a thought. “Sure, Mom. I’ll be there.”

And based on the rather nonchalant thank you, her reply had been expected. But what did she expect out of the small gesture, anyway? Fireworks?

She flipped through her phone to her planner, reviewing her deadlines for the day.

“Hello, Elayna,”

She glanced up to see Kayson standing in front of her, and her eyes widened in shock. Most of the office had similar reactions, peering at them from around their various desks and offices. Even Mark, her boss, was leaning out of his doorway, watching.

“Hi.” She set her phone down, giving him her attention. “What’re you doing here?”

She hadn’t meant to be accusing, but based on his brief grin, that’s exactly what she’d done.

“I mean, it’s great that you’re here, of course,” she said, trying to recover. “I just didn’t expect to see you again… here at the office.”

So, what was she saying? That she expected to see him out of the office?

Her cheeks felt warm.

“Oh.” He turned, catching a few eyes before they were whisked away back to their computer screens. “I just wanted to introduce you to a few people this week, before the conference meeting next Friday. Just to warm them up a little, you know? Would you be comfortable with that?”

Elayna waited for more of an explanation, but Kayson was waiting too, apparently done talking. “Uh, yeah. I’d be okay with that. Definitely.” She nodded, sitting up a little taller and feeling acutely aware of all the eyes on her.

“It’ll be a strictly casual meeting, no office talk allowed.” He winked and sunk his hands into his pockets, looking out the window calmly.

To Elayna, it seemed he was over-exaggerating the calm, as if there was something he wasn’t telling her. But she shrugged the feeling off.

“Sounds nice,” she said. “Is there a date set?” Her eyes scanned the planner at her desk.

“Oh—it’s tonight.”

Her eyes jumped back to him. “Tonight?”

“Around seven?” He spoke in an apologetic tone, as if he could tell her head was spinning.

“I… can make that work,” she finally managed, picturing her mother’s face at the same time.

“Great,” Kayson looked back at her for a minute. His aqua eyes seemed different when he wore his suit. Darker, as if they tried to match instead of standing out. But it didn’t work for them; they still stood out.

He smiled. “See you tonight.”

“Okay.” She ignored the necks that still craned in their direction and returned to her work, refusing to watch him leave the office like everyone else.

She rushed through her emails, replying to a few and leaving the rest for another day.
